Tracy Heilman is a dedicated and passionate parent of a Thomas Paine kindergartner. She is Chairperson of the Thomas Paine Library Committee, a member of the PTA, and a Thomas Paine lunchroom volunteer (also known as "the Sticker Lady"). This volunteer work has stimulated Tracy's interest in policy issues that affect the children in all of our public schools. Read on to learn about the practical and affordable ideas she has for improving Urbana's schools, and, if you live in district 7, please vote for Tracy on April 17, 2007!
Tracy on the Issues
Healthy Kids
Nutritional Breakfasts and Lunches
Aramark, the District's Food Service Provider, can provide the leadership and expertise to provide our children with top quality food. However, they currently are not. I want to work with them to ensure that our children are receiving whole grains, nutritious fruits and vegetables, and healthy proteins. Meeting this basic need in our children will give them the energy they need to learn and grow.
Menu Planning Advisory Board
Our Food Service Contract clearly states that the School District will establish and maintain a group of parents, students and teachers to assist in the menu planning. Now, let’s do it.
Wellness Policy
Our school district has a written policy covering such things as nutrition and physical education. Let’s implement it across the district.
Common Good
Equity
As a parent, I will have failed my child if I attend only to her needs at the expense of the needs of her contemporaries. As parents and as community members, we need to ensure that all of our children are receiving an education that will empower them to succeed.
No teacher left behind
This is one of our mottos at Thomas Paine. I believe it should be a motto for our district as well. We want to provide an atmosphere that attracts top educators and that rewards the excellent teachers that we have.
Collaboration between community and university
We are fortunate to live in a community that is home to the University of Illinois. However, that also means that we lose out on tax dollars on the U of I property. Let’s find innovative ways to partner with the U of I so that they can give back to the community that hosts them.
Collaboration between parents, schools, and the district
This collaboration is perhaps the most important. I pledge to work for you in ensuring open dialogue, transparent decision-making and responsibility with accountability.
Early Voting
The best way you can help our campaign is by voting for Tracy. Before election day on April 17, you can now use early voting. Different than years past, when the only early voting allowed was absentee, anyone can now vote early at their convenience. The County Clerk's office at 1776 E. Washington St. in Urbana has the following hours available for early voting:
- Monday-Friday, 8:00am until 4:00pm
And other days with extended hours are:
- Saturday, March 31st, open 9:00am until 12:00 noon
- Wednesday, April 4th, open until 7:30pm
- Saturday, April 7th, open 9:00am until 12:00 noon
- Tuesday, April 10th, open until 7:30pm
Finally, Tracy is running in Urbana's school district subdistrict #7. Take a look at the district 7 boundaries to see if you live there.
