Clearly a city council member has an obligation to be fiscally responsible, to maintain a balanced budget, to encourage economic development and local job growth, and to protect the quality of life issues that make Champaign such a vibrant and exciting community in which to live. I certainly do! I believe the role of government is also to support the development of people and the community as a whole.
Annette on the Issues
Below are my "Twelve Campaign Talking Points." I want Champaign to be a city that serves ALL its residents and its many needs and varied interests. If you share one or more of these goals with me, I would appreciate your vote on April 17.
- Protect the public health by maintaining the city's ban on smoking, but would consider one time local tax rebate for businesses who have shown a significant loss of income this year.
- Ensure tenant safety through regular city inspection of apartments.
- Help the poorest of the poor in our community by supporting full funding of Township General Assistance.
- Pursue a city ordinance to require a certain percentage of minority/female contractors receive work when city monies or incentives are used to support an economic development or project.
- Ensure fair and open housing opportunities for all by eliminating housing discrimination against people with Section 8 vouchers.
- Promote business development north of University Avenue by creating city incentives/tax credits/programs for older and neglected parts of the city.
- Evaluate the effects to taxpayers of the huge city incentives offered to corporate developers.
- Support the creation of a Community Media Center, a local television station operated by the public for the public.
- Strive to be a more environmentally sensitive and responsive city by implementing where feasible initiatives of the Sierra Club's "Cool City" program.
- Improve community and police relations by supporting the creation of a Citizens Police Review Board and development of more neighborhood outreach programs.
- Reevaluate the funding of police officers in our public schools by asking for an independent study to determine its effectiveness.
- Convert space in city mini-parks to community gardens for growing fresh vegetables and produce for neighboring residents.
